About
Hi, I'm Dr. Mary Rivers founder of Teacher Retention Academy. I am a veteran teacher dedicated to seeing other teachers develop a fulfilling and long-lasting teaching career by helping those tasked with retaining teachers.
NICE TO MEET YOU
I'm Dr. Mary Rivers
As the founder of the Teacher Retention Academy, my mission is simple: to help education leaders like you retain new teachers, reduce attrition, and build a thriving, committed teaching workforce.
With over 20 years of experience as an elementary school teacher, I saw firsthand the challenges teachers face—and the toll high turnover takes on schools. My doctoral research focused on supporting and retaining newly certified teachers, and I discovered that those tasked with teacher retention need more than encouragement; they need clear, actionable strategies that work.

My Story
I never imagined I’d end up in education. I started my career in architectural products and marketing in Minnesota, but a life-changing move to California—and the heartbreaking news of the Columbine shooting—ignited a calling to make a difference in students’ lives.
I began teaching on an emergency credential, so I know the challenges of entering the profession through alternate routes. Over time, I grew from a new teacher navigating uncharted waters to a veteran teacher with a deep understanding of the profession’s highs and lows.
After being selected as a California Teacher of the Year candidate, I realized that even as a seasoned educator, growth was essential. I earned my Doctor of Education in Teaching and Learning with a focus on Adult Learning to better equip myself—and others—with tools for success.

Why I Do It
By the early 2020s, headlines everywhere underscored a critical issue: teacher retention was in crisis. Like many educators, I’ve experienced the very challenges driving teachers away from the profession—yet I also know the profound satisfaction of staying and making a lasting impact on students.
My journey and research have equipped me with insights into strategies that genuinely improve teacher retention. Now, I’m committed to sharing this knowledge with teacher leaders, instructional coaches, and administrators. Together, we can ensure every teacher feels supported and empowered to build a fulfilling, long-lasting career.
Whether you're struggling with teacher turnover or looking to foster a culture of growth and commitment, I’m here to help. Let’s transform your schools into places where teachers—and students—thrive.Â
